Walsh Ends Skid with 35-13 Triumph over Malone

Box Score

(CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (2-5, 2-5) ended a five-game losing streak, and retained the Dick Gallagher/John Bankert Memorial Trophy, with a 35-13 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over rival Malone University (1-6, 1-6) before 2400 fans at Fawcett Stadium tonight. Walsh now leads the all-time series against Malone 14-6, and has won the last six meetings.

Walsh put 21 points on the board in the second quarter and took the lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Cavs had the football in Malone territory the entire first quarter, but came away empty after missing a 31-yard field goal.

Walsh's first score came at 13:40 of the second quarter when Jerald Robinson caught a 27-yard TD strike between two receivers from Paul Kempe. The Cavs would then add two scores in the final 1:50 of the first half, the first on a one-yard run by Justin Keith. Walsh stitched one of their finest drives of the season going 58 yards in 14 plays.

After a quick three and out by Malone, the Cavs reached into their bag of tricks and scored with six seconds to go in the half on a halfback option pass from Blake Williams to Jerald Robinson from 33 yards out.

Walsh's C. J. Chatman then tied a school record when he took the second kickoff 100 yards for a score to give the Cavs a 28-0 lead.

Malone would answer right away, as Ronnie Beers raced 72 yards for a score 19 seconds later to trim the Walsh lead to 28-7.

The Pioneers would add a 36-yard field from Marcus Moeller at 7:37 of the third period to cut the lead to 28-10.

Walsh would fumble on the next possession, and Malone would return the loose ball 40 yards for a score, but would have it nullified by an illegal block below the knees.

The Pioneers would add another Moeller field goal at 11:28 of the fourth quarter to trail 28-13.

Walsh would put the icing on the cake when Kalvin Gordon scored on a two-yard run with 8:21 to play.

Paul Kempe, making his second start at quarterback for the injured Brody Tonn, completed 14 of 22 passes for 130 yards. Anthony Schrock caught five passes for 35 yards and Robinson had four catches for a game-high 87 yards.

The Cavs rushed for 272 yards, and were led by Aaron Male's 82-yard effort. Gordon rushed for 78 yards, Keith for 62 yards and Luke Lloyd for 41 yards.

The Cavs limited Malone to 274 yards total offense and just 11 first downs. Walsh totaled 435 yards total offense and 24 first downs. Walsh converted 6 of 15 on third down and controlled the ball for almost 15 more minutes than Malone. The Cavs ran 78 plays to Malone's 51.

Walsh had plenty of stars defensively. Braily Blair and Cameron Trudell each had eight tackles. Trudell had three for a loss, and Chad Phillis led Walsh with six solo tackles and two sacks. Jamaris Brown had an interception and Devonte Marable forced a fumble.

Walsh travels to Detroit to meet Wayne State University at noon next Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on WNPQ FM, 95.9
