Cavs Ousted By Northwood In Shootout

Box Score

(MIDLAND, Mich.) – When Walsh shoots over 50 percent and outrebounds the opposition, it usually finds itself on the winning end of the scoreboard. That was not the case tonight as Northwood (4-3, 1-2) had an even better night from the field in an 87-83 defeat of the Cavaliers (5-2, 1-2).

The Cavaliers made 29-of-56 attempts from the field on the night for a 51.8 percent mark, but the Timberwolves were even hotter as they made 61 percent of their shots as they made 36-of-59 from the field. A bulk of those came close to the basket as Northwood outscored Walsh 30-16 in the paint.

Will Bowles was the driving force behind the Timberwolves offense as the center made 11-of-13 from the field for 26 points. He pulled down 10 rebounds for the double-double.

The Cavaliers started off the game hot and led by as many as 13 after Jeff Copeland (6-5, Sr., Toledo OH/St. John's Jesuit) made a three-point play on a layup and free throw to make the score 28-15 with 11:32 left in the first half. At that point, it appeared all of the momentum was in favor of Walsh, but Northwood responded with a 9-2 run to get back in the game. The Timberwolves eventually took the lead by one before Rian Burrell (6-3, Jr., Zanesville, OH/HS) closed the half with a three-point play of his own similar to Copeland's to put Walsh up 41-39 at the break.

The second half belonged to Northwood as it could hardly miss. The Timberwolves shot 64.5 percent on 20-of-31 from the field during the second half. They eventually found themselves with a 10-point lead at 76-66 with 3:55 left in the contest, but the Cavs refused to give up.

Steven Carpenter (6-3, Fr., Lancaster, OH/Fairfield Christian) was able to bring Walsh back within a single possession after his 3-pointer made the score 86-83, but after a timeout and a foul to send the hosts to the free throw line, Bowles made the first of his two attempts to ice the game.

Copeland led Walsh with 18 points as he was 6-of-10 on the night. Jesse Hardin Jr. (Jr., 6-2, Warren, OH/Harding) and Burrell each added 17 points. Hardin was one rebound away from a double-double with nine. Burrell was strong spreading the ball around as he tallied seven assists. Trey Fletcher (6-6, So., Ironton, OH/HS) rounded out the Cavs' double-figure scorers with 10.

Walsh was particularly strong from behind the arc as it made 12 of its 25 3-point attempts. The Cavs also held the rebounding advantage 30-26.

Walsh is back in action at Lake Superior State on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
