Panthers Claw Past Cavs

Box Score

(CANTON, Ohio) Despite a gallant effort, Walsh (1-3, 1-3) fell 26-8 to ninth ranked Ohio Dominican University (4-0, 4-0) 26-8 at Fawcett Stadium today in a South Division Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference contest. The Cavs are back home next Saturday to meet Northwood University at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WNPQ, 95.9 FM.

Walsh kept dodging bullets today, but just couldn't dodge enough to upset the ninth ranked Panthers. ODU scored on their first drive of the day when Jerald Butler caught a 24-yard TD pass from Mark Miller.

Walsh's defense then began to steady themselves, as they forced four straight Brent Wahle field goals, and trailed 19-0 early in the fourth period.

Walsh finally put something together offensively and reached the end zone on a seven-play 82 yard drive, which ended with Anthony Schrock making a spectacular lunging catch with 7:52 to play. Brody Tonn then connected with Blake Williams over the middle for the two-point conversion to pull the Cavs to within 19-8.

Justin Turner then recovered Bo Beegle's onside kick and the Cavs were in business on the ODU 43-yard line. A Tonn pass to Jerald Robinson advanced the ball to the Panther 20 when disaster struck. On the next play, Tonn's pass for Robinson sailed in the end zone and was intercepted by Billy Eakins with 6:56 to play.

ODU then marched 80 yards in five plays for a TD to put the game away.

Walsh struggled moving the football and totaled only 209 yards total offense. Tonn has his toughest day to date, completing 15 of 26 passes for 160 yards and three interceptions. Schrock caught five passes for 65 yards and Robinson four passes for 70 yards. Justin Keith paced the ground game with 51 yards, but lost touches when the Cavs had to play catch-up.

Skyler Parks had his finest day as a Cavalier with a game-high 11 tackles. Turner and Gary Ransom each had 10.

ODU rolled-up 430 yards, 276 coming through the air. Mark Miller completed 22 of 33 passes and Brandon Schoen rushed for 129 yards. ODU held football for almost 15 more minutes than the Cavs. Walsh was just 2 for 13 on third down conversions.
