AB No Match For Walsh In Mountain State Sweep

Box Score

(PHILIPPI,  W.Va.) – It was a quick trip to the Mountain State for the Walsh volleyball team as it swept hosting Alderson Broaddus in a non-conference affair at Rex Pyles Arena Tuesday  evening. The Cavaliers (8-15) took the three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 against the Battlers (9-13).

The opening game featured back-and-forth action for the duration as neither team gained an advantage of over five points. That happened twice, both times benefitting Walsh, but AB was able to sneak back into the set when the Cavs went up 19-14 and 21-16. The Battlers closed it to two points after a set error made the score 24-22, but an error on their next attack gave Walsh a 1-0 lead.

Walsh was a bit more dominating in the second game as a four-point run in the middle of the set gave the Cavs a 12-7 lead after a kill by Gina Kramer. That momentum snowballed as the Cavs eventually went up 10 after a spike by Liza Pflugradt made it 24-14. Another AB error ended the set.

Alderson Broaddus still had some fight left and showed some power in the final set as it took an 18-12 lead. Walsh then went on a tear with the next seven points to take back the lead after Kelsey Snider laid down three straight points on sets from Olivia Zanolli.

After the Battlers regained composure after a timeout, the hosts came back with three consecutive points to go up 21-19. It was their last runoff the game as Walsh came back and tied the match. The Cavs eventually regained the lead and ended the match on a put-down by Janelle Yunker.

"We played very relaxed and steady volleyball," Head Coach Kassie Kadera said following the win. "I was very happy to see our floor defense step up in set three and thought it was a great team win overall."

Kramer ended the match with a team-high 11 kills with one error on 17 attempts for an amazing 58.8 percent success rate. Snider and Pfugradt followed up with nine kills each.

The Battlers were paced by Megan Christman with 13 kills and Caitlin Cain with 12.

Kaitlin Bronikowski pulled out 18 digs defensively. Zanolli led the team with 20 assists.

The Cavaliers have now won four of their last six. They remain on the road for their next three matches and will return to action at Ashland this Friday. First serve against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m.
