Box Score (TIFFIN, Ohio) - Walsh moved into a second-place tie in the South Division with a 68-58 victory over Tiffin on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (14-9, 10-9) staved off a Dragons' (7-18, 3-15) comeback that saw the hosts erase a double-digit deficit.
With the win, the Cavs are now in a tie for second place with Findlay in the South Division. Both teams are just a game out of first. The two schools meet this Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The game will be broadcast on 95.9 FM WNPQ The Light.
The Cavs appeared to be in control of the game after they went up 32-21 on a 3-pointer by Davonte Beard (6-2, Sr., Akron, St. Vincent-St. Mary) with 3:22 to go in the first half. The Dragons did not go quietly as they closed the half on a 12-3 run.
In the second half, Tiffin scored four of the first five baskets to take a 40-37 lead and forced Walsh to call a timeout. After the 30-second break, the Cavs came back out and regained the lead on a layup by Zac Carter (5-9, So., Ironton, OH/HS) and a jumper by Rian Burrell (6-3, Jr., Zanesville, OH/HS) to jump start a 9-0 run.
Tiffin was unable to recover the lead. The Dragons did make it a two-point game at 48-46, but Walsh answered with another 9-0 run.
The Cavs were hot from the field as they made 50 percent (22-of-44) of their shots. Carter led the charge with a game-high 19 points as he was 6-of-10 from the field with a trio of 3-pointers. L.J. Campbell (6-8, Sr., Weirton, WV/Weir) added 12 points while Beard and Burrell scored 10 each.
Tiffin was led by Ashton Khan with 17 points.
