Late Eagles Rush Dooms Cavs

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Ohio) - A second half blitz doomed Walsh as it fell on the road to Ashland by a score of 73-56 at Kates Gymnasium Thursday evening. The Cavaliers (11-9, 7-9) and Eagles (15-7, 9-7) were battling for position at the top of the GLIAC South standings.

After a competitive first half, Ashland made its move near the midway mark of the second stanza. After Rian Burrell (6-3, Jr., Zanesville, OH/HS) scored a layup to tie the game at 41-41 with 13:58 to go, the Eagles rallied to score the next nine points. In the mean time, Walsh didn't make another field goal until a Trey Fletcher (6-6, So., Ironton, OH/HS) layup over six minutes later. That made the score 57-47 with 7:45 to go.

The Cavs couldn't get any closer than nine points the rest of the way. The last time they were within that distance was after a Burrell layup with 5:15 to go, but the Eagles answered with a 10-0 run.

Ashland had a dominating presence on the glass as it out-rebounded Walsh 41-25. Wendell Davis led the Eagles with a double-double on 19 points and 10 boards. Both were game-highs.

Burrell and Zac Carter (5-9, So., Ironton, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 14 points each.

Walsh will return to the hardwood and Alumni Arena in two days when it hosts Lake Erie College. Tip-off with the Storm is set for 3 p.m. after the women's game. The game will be broadcast on 95.9 FM WNPQ.
