Box Score (ERIE, Pa.) – Walsh dropped its first season opener in seven seasons with a 3-1 loss at Gannon Thursday evening. The Cavaliers were 4-0-2 in their last six openers, but couldn't get a result against the Golden Knights who were also playing in their first game of the season.
The Cavs' goal came from an unlikely source as Sarah Berger (So., Wadsworth, Ohio/HS) scored after a Gannon foul in the 16th minute. Walsh held the lead for the next 20 minutes until Gannon's Michelle Genetin put a couple shots on target. The first was saved by Michaella Stucky (Sr., Medina, Ohio/HS), but Genetin caught the rebound and put it into the back of the net.
The Golden Knights added another score by Mani Brueckner in the 39th minute to go into the break up 2-1. The hosts then added an insurance goal shortly after the second half began as Bethany Perri set up the final score at 51:46.
Stucky was a save shy of double-digits with nine as she faced 20 shots on the night.
The Cavs will attempt to recover as they host Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Milazzo Field.
