Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The Walsh women's soccer team had little trouble with Fairmont State in a 4-0 shutout on a hot Saturday afternoon at Milazzo Field. The Cavaliers (1-1) scored in the third minute on a penalty kick and never looked back against the Falcons (0-1) who were playing in their first contest in program history.
Jessie Gearhart (Sr., 5-9, Wadsworth, Ohio/HS) took the free shot and went right. Fairmont State's goalkeeper guessed correctly, but there was too much on the shot as it went by her fingertips. Gearhart added a second goal on an assist from Gemma Hicks (So., Queensland, Australia/St. Michaels) in the 26th minute.
The second half was all Walsh as well. Kristen Conti (Sr., 5-8, Hartville, Ohio/Lake) scored on an assist from Emily Durina (Sr., 5-6, Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) just over six minutes into the second half. Mackenzie Gatchel (So., 5-7, Salem, Ohio/United Local) added the final tally on an assist from Tarah McCausland (Fr., 5-4, Uniontown, Ohio/Green).
Walsh dominated all over the field and largely held control as it outshot the Falcons 30-2. Both of Fairmont State's shots were on target, but Michaella Stucky (Sr., 5-5, Medina, Ohio/HS) made both saves to preserve the shutout.
The Cavs will remain in non-conference action as they take on an old foe in Point Park on Wednesday. Kick-off against the Pioneers is set for 7 p.m.
