Walsh Falls Twice at Crimson Hawk Invitational

(Indiana, PA) Walsh fell to 1-3 on the season after losing their final two matches at the Crimson Hawk Invitational today. The Cavs were defeated in three sets by Pitt-Johnstown (2-0), and then lost a heartbreaker in five to Alderson Broaddus (1-2). The Cavs are at Urbana University next Friday and Saturday. They tangle with Ohio Valley on Friday at 6 pm, and then meet St. Joseph (IN) on Saturday at 11:30 am and then play host Urbana at 3:30 pm.

The Cavs fell by set scores of 29-31, 21-25 and 14-25 to Pitt-Johnstown. Walsh lost a 31-29 heartbreaker in the opening set. The set was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points. The thriller featured 17 ties. Walsh held its last lead at 30-29 on a kill by Janelle Yunker (Sr., 6-0, Marysville, OH / HS). Walsh held its last lead in the second set at 17-16 on a kill from Kaitlin Bronikowski (Jr., 5-6, Toledo, OH / Central Catholic). The last tie was at 18-18. UPJ then pulled away with three straight points. The Cavs never got on track in the third set as UPJ jumped to an early 11-3 lead.  Walsh would rally and close to within 14-10, but would get no closer. Gina Kramer (So., 5-11, Maria Stein, OH / Marion Local) led Walsh with 10 kills. Kelsey Snider (Sr., 5-10, Olmsted Falls, OH / HS) added nine kills. Olivia Zanolli (Fr, 5-10, North Canton, OH / Jackson) handed out a match-high 25 assists and Bronikowski added a match-high 26 digs.

Walsh opened the AB match with a 25-16 first set win, but fell 19-25 in the second set. The third set belonged to the Battlers as they cruised to a 25-13 win. Walsh would battle back and even the match with a 25-23 triumph in the fourth set. The Cavs jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but AB came back in hurry to take a 10-7 lead.  Walsh trailed 18-15 when the rallied to force ties at 19-19, 20-20, 22-22 and 23-23. The Cavs took the lead for good (24-23) on a block from Kramer and Emily Arnold (Fr., 5-11, Sylvania, OH / Southview), and then won the set on a Kramer kill. The Battlers led the fifth and deciding set from start-to-finish to win the match. Walsh closed to with two points at 9-7, but AB went on a 6-2 run to win 15-9. Kramer led the attack with 17 kills and a .325 percentage. Snider and Arnold had 10 kills apiece. Zanolli had 34 assists and Bronikowski 35 digs. Snider added 19 digs and Arnold had five blocks.
