Box Score 2 (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh opened up the season with a split against Urbana and Glenville State in the Cavalier Classic Volleyball Tournament which takes place today and tomorrow. The Cavaliers (1-1) dropped to the Blue Knights in straight sets to open the day, but recovered nicely with a 3-0 demolishing of the Pioneers later in the evening.
The match against Urbana was closer than the set score indicated as Walsh dropped two games by two points. The Cavs took the Knights as far as they could go in the opening game, but eventually fell 30-28. Urbana won set two 25-18 before a 25-23 victory in the third.
Gina Kramer was impressive with 13 kills while Olivia Zanolli tallied 19 assists. Zanolli also led the team with 16 digs. Amanda Adoranti added 14 while Madison Music picked up 10.
The second matched belonged to the Cavaliers from start to finish. After they were tied with Glenville State 4-4 in the opening game, Walsh went on a 21-8 rally to close the game 25-12 and never looked back. The second game was won in similar fashion by a 25-14 score before another 25-12 decision.
Serving was a strong suit for the Cavs as they recorded 11 aces in the match. Kramer added 16 kills while Zanolli made 30 assists.
The Cavs are back in action tomorrow with contests against future conference rival Davis & Elkins at 11 a.m. as well as Fairmont State at 5 p.m.
