Cavs Crush Pioneers In G-MAC Debut

Box Score

(CANTON, Ohio) – In the final men's soccer game at Pioneer Field, Walsh cruised by Malone by a score of 5-1 in its first Great Midwest Athletic Conference game in program history. The Cavaliers improved to 2-0-1 with the victory, while the Pioneers dropped to 0-2 on the short season.

It didn't take long for the scoring to start as JP Alexis dribbled down the left side before crossing over to Myles Cornwall on the opposite side of the box. Cornwall promptly put it in on the near side for a quick 1-0 lead just 8:59 into the contest.

Alexis was just getting started on his best game of his short collegiate career as he scored the second goal of the game in the 27th minute on an assist from Hadi Undheim.

The score remained 2-0 through the half, but the Cavs once again struck early in the second half. Cornwall was again involved in the scoring as he assisted Dwight Van Dyke after driving in on the left side in similar fashion to the first goal before Van Dyke finished.

Four minutes later, Van Dyke took a corner on the right side and found Gary Canam on the opposite end who headed the ball in to make it 4-0.

Alexis put the final touches on the game on a penalty kick after he was fouled by the goalkeeper in the box. He now has three goals and two assists for eight points on the short season.

Defensively Tom Jackson recorded the win with three saves in 63:37 of work before giving way to Jon-Paul Della Pia who made five saves.

Overall, Walsh out-shot the Pioneers 24-12 and held an 8-5 advantage on corners.

The Cavaliers, who now lead the series 42-17-2, will continue its four-game road stretch with a trip to the Empire State to take on former conference rival Daemen. Kickoff with the Wildcats is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
