No. 2 Walsh Advances to G-MAC Championship

(OWENSBORO, Ky.) – The Walsh women's tennis team will play for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship after defeating Davis & Elkins 5-2 in the tournament semifinals. The No. 2 Cavaliers improved to 11-10, while the Senators end the year at 7-9.

The Cavaliers trailed early after they fell in two of the three doubles matches. Mercedes Fernandez and Clara Drasch fell to Laura Fermosel and Elise Simon 8-4 to start the day before Maria Kacalova and Katarina Razum tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-3 victory over Ester Bolmenas and Kelsie Roby.

However, Davis & Elkins went back up 2-1 after Karin Rosario and Amanda Fewster defeated Sofia Khairutdinova and Parvanee Karimpour 8-4 to complete doubles play.

Once singles action started, it was all Maroon and Gold. Drasch tied the match once again after she made quick work of Laura Vargas with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles.

The rest of the points followed in order. Razum defeated Bolmenas next in fourths with a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Khairutdinova followed with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Roby in fifths. Karimpour proceeded to end the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rosario in sixths.

The Cavaliers will take on top-seeded Hillsdale tomorrow in the championship at 10 a.m.
