Football Falls in G-MAC Finale

PHILIPPI, West Virginia - The G-MAC schedule was closed out as the Walsh Cavaliers football team traveled to Alderson Broaddus for a matchup with the Battlers on Saturday (Nov. 9) afternoon. 

The Cavaliers fell 24-17 in the final game within the conference. 

It was a defensive first quarter as neither team was able to generate much offense. The Battlers were knocking on the door of the endzone on their third drive of the day before Ronald Robinson recovered a fumble in the endzone to keep the game scoreless. Walsh could not capitalize and the game was tied 0-0 after one quarter. 

Alderson Broaddus scored with 6:42 left in the second quarter on an offensive fumble recovery in the endzone after a two-yard run, taking a 7-0 lead. 

Walsh rallied and cut the lead to 7-3 at the buzzer. The offense drove 67 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with a 24-yard field goal by Chad Mirolo as Walsh trailed by four at halftime.

The Battlers added a 38-yard field goal with 11:51 to go in the third quarter, pushing Walsh's deficit to 10-3. Five minutes later, Alderson Broaddus made it 17-3 with a seven-yard touchdown run. 

Johnny Agresta recovered a fumble two minutes after the score, giving the Cavaliers a short field. After three runs from Koby Adu-Poku, Nick Gassman threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Smith. The extra point was blocked as Walsh trailed 17-9 with one minute to go in the third quarter. 

The Cavaliers started the fourth quarter with the ball and drove down the field to score. Gassman found Brad Scott in the endzone for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Walsh went for the two-point conversion and Gassman tied the game at 17 with a pass to Adu-Poku. The seven play, 72 yard drive knotted the game with 11:16 left in the game. 

Alderson Broaddus took the 24-17 lead with 6:43 left on a three-yard touchdown run and that was the final score. 

Walsh compiled 292 yards of total offense in the game with 114 passing and 178 rushing yards. Gassman completed 14 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns along with 55 rushing yards on ten carries. Adu-Poku carried the ball 17 times for 100 yards on the ground. Deondre Cook and Quinn Thomas each caught four passes for 52 and 18 yards, respectively. 

Leondre Crosby made 16 tackles (tying for 9th in G-MAC history) with 12 solo tackles (tied for 5th in G-MAC history) and two tackles for loss. 

The Cavaliers will travel West to St. Louis next week for the season finale at Missouri Baptist on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 PM.
