Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing on a rare Monday (Dec. 16) evening, the Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team battled through a slow start with a strong finish against the Ohio Dominican Panthers at Alumni Hall.
The Cavaliers shot 48% for the game, defeating the Panthers 70-48 in G-MAC play.
The first eight minutes of the game saw ten points scored between the two teams as Sterling Christy put Walsh up 6-4 with all six points. One minute later, Ohio Dominican took the 7-6 advantage with a three pointer. JT Shumate put the Cavaliers up 9-7 with a trey and the Cavaliers never trailed. Mark Mokros and Alphonso Baity each added a three pointer, pushing the lead to 15-9 with 9:38 to go in the first half. Four straight Panthers points trimmed the lead to 15-13, just 45 seconds later. Walsh ended the half on a 15-3 run with Christian Montague tallying nine of the 15 points in the final eight minutes. The Cavs led 30-16 at the halftime intermission.
Ohio Dominican battled back with a 17-6 run over the first six minutes of the first half, including a 12-0 run as they pulled within 3, 36-33. Walsh followed ODU's run with a 17-3 rally of their own, fueled by eight consecutive points from Baity. Baity drilled back-to-back threes and knocked down a pair of free throws. With the 17-3 run, Walsh's lead grew to 53-36 with 9:19 to go. The teams exchanged buckets through the next six minutes before Walsh closed the game with a 6-0 run. Baity knocked down four straight free throws after a technical foul. The Cavaliers were victorious 70-48.
Alphonso Baity led the Cavaliers with 15 points on three treys and six-for-six from the free throw line. Sterling Christy had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Christian Montague scored 14 points.
Walsh travels to Florida for two non-conference games, starting on Friday (Dec. 20) at Saint Leo at 4:30 PM.
