Thursday Brings Deja Vu for the Cavaliers

Box Score

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Michigan - There were a few instances of deja vu for the Walsh Cavaliers women's soccer team as they took on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Thursday (Sept. 12) afternoon in Michigan.

The two teams met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season and the Cavaliers were victorious by a final score of 1-0. Thursday's game was a 1-0 final on a first half goal for Walsh.

Saginaw Valley State outshot the Cavaliers 7-5 in the first half but the Cavaliers scored the only goal. Hannah Bowman scored on an assist by Maddie Malinowski in the 26th minute as Walsh led 1-0. The Cardinals continued to pressure on offense with a 10-4 shot differential in the second half but they could not cash in with a goal.

Mickey McClanahan earned her second shutout of the season with six saves in 17 SVSU shots.

Thursday's game had a similar feel to the season opener, where Bowman tallied the Cavs' only goal in the first half and McClanahan made ten saves in a shutout.

In a flashback to last year's matchup, the Cavaliers scored the game's only goal in the first 23 minutes. McClanahan had another shutout with six saves as Walsh advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Walsh is 2-1 for the 2019 season and will travel to Davis & Elkins for a non-conference matchup on Saturday (Sept. 14). The Cavaliers and the Senators will kick off at 12:00 PM.
