Box Score

ROCHESTER, New York - The Walsh Cavaliers men's soccer team got a golden goal in their season opener on Thursday (Sept. 5) night over the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks.

Eirik Bomann scored his first collegiate goal at the best time as his goal won it for the Cavaliers 3-2 in the 105th minute. For the sixth straight season, Walsh is victorious in the season opener.

Following a throw in, Walsh jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Peyton Barnes scored on an assist from Myles Cornwall in the sixth minute. In the 11th minute, Roberts Wesleyan knotted the score at one with a goal. Three minutes later, the Redhawks gained a 2-1 lead and took that through halftime.

Walsh continued to mount offensive pressure in the second half as they took ten shots, finally paying off in the 84th minute. Manny Perez assisted on the equalizer from Dwight Van Dyke as the game was tied with just minutes remaining.

The game went into overtime and neither team could capitalize, bringing the opening contest into a second overtime.

The Cavaliers took the first three shots in the second overtime, leading to the game-winner. Jake Cunningham took a shot that was saved by the Redhawks goalie, seconds before the golden goal. After a goal kick, Cornwall lofted a ball from the right corner of the field to the far side, where Bomann tipped the ball past the Redhawks goalkeeper for the winner.

Walsh outshot Roberts Wesleyan 22-13 in the game with the Cavaliers having eight shots on goal.

Barnes, Van Dyke and Bomann accounted for the three Walsh goals while Cornwall assisted on a pair on goals. Perez also had an assist on the game-tying goal.

Walsh will continue the swing in New York as they will play Daemen on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 2:00 PM.
