#25 Cavaliers Win Eighth Straight Contest, 84-69

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The #25 Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team extended their season-long winning streak to eight games with a near wire-to-wire 84-69 win over the Ursuline College Arrows on Thursday (Jan. 9) night at Seidman Gymnasium. 

Walsh is now 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the G-MAC, maintaining their first place spot in the G-MAC Point Ranking System. 

Megan Ball opened the game with a layup and Mayci Sales scored two straight layups, putting Walsh ahead 6-0 in the first two minutes. The Cavaliers opened a six point lead two other times as they led 11-5 with 6:27 left in the first quarter. Ursuline tied the game at 11 with a 6-0 run in a two minute span. Walsh ended the first quarter on a 14-5 run as they led 25-16 after one period. Five different players scored on the run as Sales scored four points for eight points total in the quarter. 

Ursuline cut the lead to five points three times in the first six minutes of the second quarter. After Walsh led 34-29, Lexie Scarton, Quionche Carter and Kimmie Borck all hit a three pointer on a Walsh 9-0 run in two minutes. The five point lead ballooned to 14, 43-29 with 1:40 left in the half. Borck added one more three pointer as the Cavaliers led 46-35 at the intermission.  

The Arrows opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run in two minutes as Walsh called timeout. Carter and Sales combined on six straight points as the lead grew back to ten points, forcing an Arrows timeout. Carter put the Cavaliers up 11 at one point but the lead was 64-58 going to the fourth quarter. 

Sales scored ten points in the fourth quarter as Walsh pushed a four point lead to 15 in the fourth quarter. Ursuline got as close as 67-63 with 9:13 left. A 17-6 run ended the game as Walsh finished off an 84-69 win. 

Sales set a new career-high with 26 points after she shot 11-15 overall and 4-9 from the free throw line. She finished off her fifth double-double with ten rebounds. Carter ended the night with 19 points on eight field goals and a trio of three pointers. She added six rebounds and five assists. Tyler Newkirk gave Walsh 14 points on five field goals and three free throws, with four steals. Borck scored 11 points off the bench on three treys and two free throws. 

The Cavaliers shot 50% in three of four quarters, finishing with a 49.2% (32-65) shooting percentage.

Walsh returns home to Alumni Arena, where they will host Cedarville on Saturday (Jan. 11). The doubleheader will be part of the D2 Showcase on ESPN3. Tipoff will be 1:05 PM.
