Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team retained the Mayor's Cup for the 13th straight time on Wednesday (Feb. 26) evening at Alumni Arena, defeating the Malone Pioneers 74-59.
Walsh led for all but 28 seconds in the first half, holding a 37-26 lead at halftime. The Cavaliers weathered a second half rally from Malone as the Pioneers tied the game at 49 with 9:35 left. Over the final 9:35, Walsh won the game with a 25-10 run. Mark Mokros nailed a three pointer as the go-ahead basket with 9:16 remaining in the game. Darryl Straughter scored 13 points in the final nine minutes as five different players fueled the run down the stretch.
With the win, Walsh improved to 21-6 overall and 12-5 in the G-MAC as they worked towards a home Quarterfinal matchup next week. The team sits third in the G-MAC Point Ranking System.
Four players ended the game in double-figures as Mokros led all scorers with 20 points on six field goals (three treys) and a perfect five-for-five from the free throw line. Straughter made a trio of threes and converted all five free throws in a 16-point effort along with five rebounds. Christian Montague gave the Cavaliers 16 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Caleb Canter scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.
Walsh concludes the regular season at Lake Erie on Saturday (Feb. 29) against the Storm. Tipoff is at 1:00 PM from the Osborne Center.
