Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - In a rematch of the 2019 G-MAC Tournament Final at Alumni Arena, the 2020 Great Midwest Women's Basketball Tournament Final on Saturday (March 7) featured the same result but different route.
The Walsh Cavaliers held the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers to ten points in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Panthers, 81-58.
Kentucky Wesleyan scored first on a free throw but Walsh quickly took the 2-1 lead on a Mayci Sales jumper. Three pointers from Megan Ball, Kimmie Borck, Sales, Tyler Newkirk and Quionche Carter fueled a 21-6 run by Walsh. They led 21-7 with 4:35 left in the first quarter before ending the frame with a 31-10 lead. Walsh pushed the lead to 25, 45-20 with five minutes left before halftime but Kentucky Wesleyan ended the half on an 11-0. The Walsh lead shrunk to 45-31 at halftime, but the Panthers run flowed over into the third quarter as KWC made their first two baskets. Walsh led 45-35 with 8:55 left in the third quarter. The Cavaliers defense began to lock onto the Panthers as they only allowed KWC seven more points in the quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Walsh led 69-42 over the Panthers and looked well on their way to a second straight G-MAC title. The largest lead of the day came in the fourth quarter, 29 points but the final score was 81-58.
All five starters in double figures as Carter led all scorers with 21 points. She shot eight-of-16 from the floor with one three pointer and four free throws along with nine rebounds. Sales ended with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Borck nailed a trio of three pointers while scoring 13 points. Ball scored 12 points while Newkirk compiled 11 points. Jamie Halloran (six points, five rebounds) and Alyssa Dean (four points, three rebounds) had solid efforts off the bench.
As a team, Walsh shot 43.5% overall and ten-for-ten from the free throw line. Walsh totaled 22 assists with seven players tallying three or more assists. Borck led the way with four assists while Sales, Carter, Newkirk, Scarton, Halloran and Dean all had three dimes each.
