Cavaliers Cruise Past Fighting Scots on Road

VIENNA, West Virginia - The Walsh Cavaliers volleyball team completed the opening week road swing with an appearance in West Virginia to challenge the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots. The Cavaliers swept the Fighting Scots 3-0 on Friday (Jan. 22) at the Snyder Activity Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walsh got the first set scoring started on a kill from Olivia Maczuzak before Ohio Valley tied it on a block. Following the 1-1 tie, Walsh used seven kills and two blocks on a 10-2 run to force a OVU timeout. After the timeout, Walsh outscored the Fighting Scots 14-5 to win set one 25-8. 
  • The Cavaliers opened the second set with nine straight points and 11 of the first 13 points before Walsh used an 8-0 rally late in the set to seal a 25-9 win in the second game. 
  • Walsh scored 18 consecutive points in the third set as they led 18-0 at one point. The final score of the third set was 25-9.

FOR THE CAVALIERS

  • Olivia Maczuzak led the Cavaliers for the second straight match with 13 kills on 28 attacks. The junior started the match with five kills in the first set and ended the night with six kills in the final set. She finished with a .393 hitting percentage and also had four digs and one block assist. 
  • Grace Lindquist had a career-high eight kills out of 16 attacks with three digs, one solo block and two block assists.
  • Amber King was seven of nine on attacks for the night (team-high .778 attack %) and an active night on the blocking front. King had one solo block and assisted on four other blocks.
  • Sydney Dixon gave the Cavaliers seven kills, nine digs and two block assists. 
  • Julie Kruse had 17 assists and a career-high five aces for Walsh. Four of her five aces came on the 18-0 run in the third set as she was the server for 19 points. 
  • Natalie Brutscher set a career-high with 18 digs. Brutscher compiled seven digs in the first, six in the second and five in the third set.
  • Olivia Kearns had 12 assists and six digs (all in the first set) on her scoresheet.

FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • Maria Cordoba had a team-high five kills for Ohio Valley while Shayne Sanders led the squad with ten digs.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS 

  • Walsh totaled a .438 attack percentage for the night as they were above .350 in all three sets individually. Ohio Valley had a -.103 attack percentage through three sets.
  • The Cavs finished with seven total blocks, 40 kills, seven aces and 51 digs.

NOTABLE

  • Walsh is 2-0 for the second straight season and third in the last four seasons.

  • Walsh will host the Findlay Oilers in their home opener on Friday (Jan. 29) night at the Cecchini Center. The match will begin at 7:00 PM.
