Second Half Run Lifts Panthers to Late Win Over Cavaliers

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team fell victim to a late second half run by the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Panthers ended Walsh's four game winning streak, 71-62.

The Short Story: Walsh led by as many as ten points in the first half, taking an 18-8 lead eight minutes in and a 42-32 lead with 56 seconds left in the half. Walsh led 43-34 at halftime. KWC regained a two-point lead with 11:25 left. Christian Simmons put the Cavaliers up 56-55 with 7:23 to go. The Panthers ended the game with a 16-6 run over the final seven minutes.

OPENING TIP

  • Christian Montague led the Cavaliers with 14 points on five-of-14 shooting and three treys. He had five rebounds and two assists. 
  • Christian Simmons tallied his fourth double-digit scoring game of the season with 12 points. He had seven-of-eight free throws made with two field goals (one three).
  • Luke Howes (eight points) and Mark Kostelac (seven points) added key efforts throughout the afternoon.
  • Caleb Canter finished with seven rebounds and four assists for the Cavaliers. 

THE DIFFERENCE 

  • Kentucky Wesleyan outscored Walsh 37-20 in the second half, while outshooting the Cavaliers 46.7% (14-30) to 25.9% (7-27). 

BEHIND THE NUMBERS 

  • Walsh was out-rebounded 41-34 in the game with both teams having eight offensive boards. Four different players grabbed at least seven rebounds for the Panthers. 
  • Tre Cobbs led the Panthers with 19 points with 14 coming in the second half. 

NOTABLE

  • Walsh had won 16 straight home games (4th longest streak in D2), before Saturday's loss.
