Missed Opportunities Haunt Cavaliers at Hillsdale, 20-3

HILLSDALE, Michigan - The Walsh Cavaliers football team continued the G-MAC schedule with a road matchup at Hillsdale on Saturday (Oct. 9) afternoon. at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium. The Cavaliers fell short 20-3 to the Chargers, as they fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

BIG MOMENTS RECAP

  • Walsh started the game with the opening kickoff and completed a nine play, 74-yard scoring drive. Tom Vatter connected with Keyshawn Johnson on a 32-yard pass early in the drive before Mason Brown hit a 23-yard field goal with 11:11 left in the first quarter. 
  • On Walsh's final drive of the first quarter, Walsh completed two big pass plays but the drive stalled in Hillsdale territory as Hillsdale took over deep in their end of the field, up 3-0 after one period. 
  • Hillsdale scored in the final minute of the second quarter following a Walsh interception on a two-yard passing touchdown. Hillsdale led 7-3 at halftime. 
  • A blocked punt touchdown by the Chargers made it 13-3 with 7:33 left in the third quarter. 
  • Sal Sidebotham ended the third quarter with a sack of Hillsdale's quarterback as Walsh trailed 13-3 as the game headed to the fourth quarter. 
  • The opening drive of the fourth quarter saw Walsh drive 88 yards on 15 plays, only to be turned away at the goal line on an interception. 
  • Hillsdale followed with a scoring drive, as they took a 20-3 lead on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:53 left. 

CAVALIER TOTALS

  • Walsh reached season-highs in the categories of first downs, total offense and passing yards. The Cavaliers totaled 24 first downs with 387 yards of total offense. The passing attack totaled 296 yards while the rushing game accounted for 91 yards. 
  • Vatter completed 24 of 51 passes with 296 yards and four interceptions. 
  • Thomas Wilks totaled 84 yards rushing on 21 carries. 
  • Keyshawn Johnson had a team-high six catches for 105 yards.
  • Jaden Gresham (47 yards) and Bernard Bates (41 yards) each caught four passes.  
  • Diego Bremer led the Cavaliers with 12 tackles while Sidebotham added ten tackles and a sack.  

UP NEXT

  • Walsh will return home as they host Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday (October 16). The game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM kickoff.
