Women's Basketball Closes Out GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover

DETROIT, Michigan - The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season at the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover, hosted by Wayne State at the brand-new WSU Fieldhouse over the weekend. 

Walsh started the weekend with a 80-64 win over Ferris State on Saturday (Nov. 13) before Wayne State spoiled the opening weekend with a 82-64 win on Sunday (Nov. 14).

Saturday vs. Ferris State (W, 80-64)

  • After trailing 20-16 after one quarter, Walsh held Ferris State to five points in the second quarter (2-14 shooting, 1-7 from three). Over the final 7:25 of the second quarter, Walsh ended the period with a 15-0 run. 
  • Walsh led for 27:34 of the game, compared to Ferris State who led for 9:44 of game time.
  • Sha Carter went 11-of-15 from the floor with six-of-nine free throw shooting, totaling 28 points. Carter added six rebounds and three assists. 
  • Mayci Sales had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The fifth-year senior made nine-of-12 shots and seven-of-eight free throws. 
  • Alyssa Dean scored ten points off the bench with six rebounds and four assists, including a pair of three pointers. 
  • Lexie Scarton tallied seven points, six rebounds and six assists. 
  • The Cavaliers shot 52.6% (30-57) from the floor despite only making three of 17 three pointers. 
  • The defense held the Bulldogs to 33.8% shooting on 23-of-68 shooting and seven-of-28 from beyond the arc. 

Sunday vs. Wayne State (L 82-64)

  • The Cavaliers fell behind 30-8 in the first quarter and could not fully return to the lead. 
  • Sha Carter was one of three players in double figures as Carter and Morgan McMillen tied for the team lead with 14 points. 
    • Carter made five field goals with four free throws to go with seven rebounds and four assists. 
  • McMillen nailed four three pointers and had three steals in a 14-point effort. 
  • Mayci Sales added her second straight double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. 
  • Abby Hickey scored eight points off the bench with a pair of threes. 
  • Walsh finished with a 31.1% shooting percentage (23-74) and 30% from deep (9-30).

Walsh returns home for the home opener on Saturday (Nov. 20) as they welcome the Edinboro Fighting Scots at 1:00 PM.
