Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team headed to the Hawai'i coast for some basketball over the Thanksgiving holiday break as they competed in the Malika Oahu Thanksgiving Classic, hosted at Hawaii Pacific University.
Walsh battled the Chaminade Swords on Thursday (Nov. 25) with a 87-32 win before besting the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets 73-51 on Friday (Nov. 26).
Thursday vs. Chaminade (W, 87-32)
- Walsh led 5-0 and 10-4 before Chaminade closed the gap to 10-8 with 3:16 left in the first quarter. The Cavaliers closed the quarter with a 10-0 run and extended the run to 21-0 over the first 2:15 of the second quarter.
- Walsh's defense held Chaminade to ten points or under in all quarters, including six points in the third.
- Abby Hickey led the Cavaliers with 14 points off the bench, on five-of-seven shooting and four-of-five from beyond the arc.
- Sha Carter had 13 points with nine rebounds and three assists, while making five shots and three free throws.
- Megan Ball poured in 13 points, making six-of-seven shots from the floor.
- Morgan McMillen nailed four three pointers in a 12-point effort.
- Lexie Scarton added seven points, six rebounds and five steals while Alyssa Dean had seven points and five assists.
- Walsh's bench got additions from Morgan Darnell (eight points), Lauren Galaska (five points/five rebounds), Akilah Stewart (three points), and Jamie Schmeltz (five points, three steals).
- The Cavaliers shot 48.3% (29-60) from the floor. Walsh shot 59.3% with 16 three pointers on the night.
- The defense held the Swords to 24.5% shooting on 12-of-49 shooting and one-of-seven from beyond the arc.
Friday vs. Black Hills State (W, 73-51)
- The game was close throughout the first six minutes before Walsh opened a 12-point lead with a 10-0 run in the first quarter. The Cavaliers pushed the lead to as many as 14 points until the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to five with 3:38 left in the half. Walsh ended the half with a 6-0 run and kicked off the second half with a 10-0 run. Overall, Walsh spanned nearly eight minutes of game action with a 16-0 run. Walsh controlled the rest of the game for the win.
- Morgan McMillen was five-of-five from deep and seven-of-eight overall in a 19-point game.
- Sha Carter scored ten points with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- Megan Ball was the third in double-figures with 17-points. The Waterford native made six of her seven shots with two threes.
- Lexie Scarton tallied eight points and six rebounds.
- Alyssa Dean had nine points and five assists.
- Walsh finished with a 53.7% shooting percentage (29-54) and 42% from deep (8-19).
- The Yellow Jackets shot 28.8% (17-59) overall and 33.3% (10-30) from three.
Walsh returns to Ohio and will prepare for conference play as they head to Lake Erie on Thursday (Dec. 2).
