Late Run Lifts Cavaliers to Road Win, Bruce Gets Win #100

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team made some key shots down the stretch on Thursday (Feb. 11) night at Niekamp Arena as Walsh came back from ten points down to win over the Findlay Oilers 71-67. The Cavaliers improved to 11-4 overall with a comeback in the fourth quarter.

The short story: In a game that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties, the Walsh Cavaliers used a late fourth quarter run to seal a comeback win over the Findlay Oilers. After Findlay led 44-42 after three quarters, the Oilers outscored the Cavaliers 19-11 over the first four minutes of the final period. Trailing 63-53 with 5:48 left, Walsh outpaced Findlay 18-4 over the final six minutes to comeback. Walsh scored 13 straight points over the last 4:18 minutes, while holding Findlay without a field goal. Lexie Scarton tied the game at 67 with a three pointer with 1:39 left. Alyssa Dean hit the game-winning jumper with two seconds left, lifting the Cavaliers. Scarton picked off the inbounds pass from Findlay's last chance and scored a layup, making the final score 71-67. 

OPENING TIP

  • Alyssa Dean scored 21 points on eight-of-14 shooting with five three pointers, setting career-highs in all categories. Dean added 16 of her points in the second half alone. 
  • Mayci Sales finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Sales connected on ten-of-17 shots from the floor.
  • Lexie Scarton had her third double-double this season as she tallied 13 points and ten assists. She had a game-high four steals. 

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Findlay went 0-for-four shooting in the final 4:18 with six turnovers in that span. Walsh forced two turnovers in the final 16 seconds and three in the last minute. Overall, Walsh went on a 13-0 run with seven points from Scarton and two each from Carter, Dean and Sales.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

  • Walsh forced 23 turnovers on Findlay's end, leading to 24 points for the Cavaliers. 
  • Findlay outshot Walsh 49.1% (27-55) to 42.3% (30-71) from the floor, 46.2% (6-13) to 28.6% (8-28) from three and 77.8% (7-9) to 75% (3-4) at the free throw line. 
  • Walsh made eight three pointers on the night as Dean made five of them.
  • For the third straight game, Walsh had 21 assists. 
  • The Oilers won the rebounding war, 40-30. 

NOTABLE

  • Head coach Kate Bruce earned her 100th career win on Thursday (Feb. 11) night in her 135th career game. She is the fourth coach in program history to reach 100 wins with the Cavaliers. 
  • Mayci Sales jumped into sixth place all-time with 602 made field goals. 
  • With the win, Walsh remains in fourth place with a 3.77 point rating within the G-MAC.

NEXT UP

  • Walsh will travel to Painesville, Ohio on Tuesday (Feb. 16) for a 5:30 PM start at the Osborne Center against Lake Erie.
