Cavaliers Drop Heartbreaker in Home Opener, 10-6

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers football team battled for an entire 60 minutes in their home opener against the Davenport Panthers on Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon but the game-winning drive as time expired fell just short. The Davenport Panthers defeated the Cavaliers 10-6 at Bob Commings Field.

  • Score: Davenport 10, Walsh 6
  • Records: Walsh 1-1, Davenport 1-1
  • Place: Canton, Ohio (Bob Commings Field at Canton GlenOak)

SCORING RECAP

  • Walsh scored the first points of the game on their first drive after the defense held tough on a fourth down attempt by the Panthers. Mason Brown put the Cavaliers up 3-0 with 6:21 to go in the first quarter with a 38-yard field goal. 
  • In a defensive first half, Davenport tied the game at three with a field goal of their own with 2:26 left in the second quarter. 
  • After Davenport recovered the second half "onside" kick, the Panthers pounced on a 17-yard touchdown run as they took a 10-3 lead with less than a minute elapsed in the third quarter. 
  • Walsh cut the lead to four with a 25-yard field goal with 8:57 left by Mason Brown
  • The Cavaliers got the ball back with 1:23 left on the clock. Walsh drove down into the red zone but clock ran out as Walsh got to the two-yard line on third and goal. 

CAVALIER TOTALS

  • Walsh totaled 17 first downs with 319 yards of total offense. The passing attack totaled 152 yards while the rushing game added 167 yards. 
  • Hodge completed 14 of 25 passes for 152 yards passing. The mobile quarterback was the leading rusher with 114 yards rushing on 15 carries.
  • Tyre Gray caught seven passes for 89 yards, including a long pass of 35 yards. 
  • Walsh picked off the Davenport quarterback twice as Johnny Agresta and Robbie Page each had a takeaway. 
  • Matt Amison made 11 tackles in the game while Diego Bremer had ten tackles of his own.  

PANTHER TOTALS

  • Davenport finished with 315 yards of total offense despite being held to 65 yards passing. 
  • Blake Daniels went six-of-18 passing with 65 yards and two interceptions. He also led the way with 70 rushing yards on nine attempts.  
  • Cory Blankenburg made six catches for 61 yards as the leading wideout. 
  • Elysee Mbem-Bosse had a team-high ten tackles. 

UP NEXT

  • Walsh will begin the GLVC/G-MAC crossover next Saturday (Sept. 18) as they travel to Quincy for a matchup. The game is scheduled for 2:00 PM Eastern.
