Football Falls at Quincy, 38-17

QUINCY, Illinois - The Walsh Cavaliers football team renewed an old rivalry on Saturday (Sept. 18) as the Cavaliers headed west to face the Quincy Hawks. For the first time since 2011, the Cavaliers and the Hawks went to battle as a part of the GLVC/G-MAC scheduling alliance.

  • Score: Quincy 38, Walsh 17

SCORING RECAP

  • Quincy opened the scoring with an 83-yard touchdown pass on their second drive of the day. The Hawks led 7-0 less than three minutes into the game and held that lead until the second quarter. 
  • After Walsh's final drive of the first quarter stalled on a turnover, the Cavaliers cashed in on their first drive of the second quarter. A 13 play, 84-yard drive was capped by a 15-yard TD pass from Jeremy Hodge to Tyre Gray. The game was tied with 5:44 left in the first half. 
  • The Hawks ended the first half with back-to-back passing touchdowns of 42 and 41 yards, respectively as they opened a 21-7 lead at the intermission. 
  • A short field goal for Quincy made it 24-7 with 10:39 left in the third quarter. 
  • After a drive with a number of big plays to get Walsh into the red zone, Mason Brown nailed a 23-yard field goal three minutes later as the gap was closed to 24-10. 
  • In the fourth quarter, the Hawks used an interception to add a four-yard touchdown run before scoring a 22-yard touchdown pass five minutes later. 
  • Walsh ended the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Hodge to Soloman Clemens in the fourth quarter with 5:34 to go. 

CAVALIER TOTALS

  • Walsh totaled 19 first downs with a season-high 366 yards of total offense. The passing attack totaled 212 yards (a season-best) while the rushing game added 154 yards. 
  • Hodge completed 16 of 34 passes for 212 yards passing with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. His 212 yards passing was a career-high. 
  • Thomas Wilks tallied 119 yards rushing on 24 carries, including a long run of 42 yards. 
  • Gray caught five passes for 77 yards, with a touchdown catch. Gray also had three kick returns for 87 yards.
  • Jaden Gresham had two catches for 61 yards.  
  • Sal Sidebotham led the Cavaliers with ten tackles with eight solo tackles and 1.5 sacks.  
  • As a defense, Walsh completed five sacks of the Quincy QB. Sidebotham had 1.5 sacks with Marcus Shellenbarger, Doug Taylor and Matt Esterle each making one sack. Grayson Long added half a sack. 

HAWK TOTALS

  • Quincy finished with 450 yards of total offense with 107 rushing yards and a 343 yard passing day. The Hawks had 22 first downs in the game. 
  • Tionne Harris was 18-of-37 passing with 343 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Taylor Temple had a team-best 71 rushing yards on 16 carries.   
  • AJ Hardin made seven catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns as the leading wideout. 
  • Eugene Witherspoon had a pair of scores on three catches for 71 yards. 
  • Dale Dambek had a team-high eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.

  • Walsh will wrap-up the GLVC/G-MAC crossover next Saturday (Sept. 25) as they will host McKendree. The game is scheduled for 2:00 PM Eastern at Bob Commings Field.
