Walsh Claims Season Opening Victory over Daemen, 2-1

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The 2021 season started with a bang for the Walsh Cavaliers men's soccer team as the Cavaliers were victorious in the home opener Thursday (Sept. 2) at Larry Staudt Field. The Cavaliers delivered a 2-1 win over the Daemen Wildcats in the lidlifter. 

Jac Humphreys gave the Cavaliers the 2-1 lead late in the second half on his first career goal. Humphreys broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 79th minute. 

Daemen started the scoring in the 36th minute on a goal by Dennis Montero Guerrero. A few minutes later, the duo of Harry Gardner and Jake Cunningham connected for the equalizer in the 42nd minute. Cunningham fed the ball to Gardner, who finished with a goal past the keeper. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime with an even shot total, 8-8.

Walsh continued the pressure as they took ten shots in the second half to Daemen's three, leading to the game-winning goal. 

Overall, Walsh won the shot battle with 18 shots to 11 and put nine shots on goal. Daemen put four on goal in the game.

Ethan Burawa made three saves in the goal. 

Walsh will continue the opening weekend homestand with a non-conference matchup with Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday (Sept. 4). Kickoff from Larry Staudt Field will be at 3:00 PM.
