Cavaliers Open Great Midwest Play With 35-10 Loss to Ashland

CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers football team kicked off the G-MAC schedule with a Thursday (Sept. 30) night matchup as the Cavaliers played host to the Ashland Eagles at Bob Commings Field. Ashland spoiled the Thursday night Homecoming festivities with a 35-10 win over the Cavaliers.

  • Score: Ashland 35, Walsh 10
  • Records: Ashland 2-2 (1-0), Walsh 1-4 (0-1)

BIG MOMENTS RECAP

  • Ashland scored on their two first drives as they led 14-0 with 6:28 left in the first quarter. 
  • The next Ashland drive ended as Matt Amison intercepted Brenner in the red zone. The Cavaliers responded with an 11 play, 60 yard drive that ended with a 26 yard field goal by Mason Brown. Walsh cut the lead to 14-3 with 13:26 to go in the first half. 
  • Ashland got their second rushing touchdown of the contest four minutes later, this time from three yards away. 
  • Amison and Marcus Shellenbarger added sacks in the rest of the first half as Ashland lead 21-3 at the intermission. 
  • The first two drives of the second half were scoring drives for the Eagles as they built a 35-3 with 5:18 left in the third quarter. 
  • At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Johnny Agresta recovered a muffed punt return by the Eagles. 
  • Walsh put together a nine play, 39 yard drive that was capped with a five yard touchdown pass from Tom Vatter to Jaden Gresham

CAVALIER TOTALS

  • Walsh totaled 14 first downs with 238 yards of total offense. The passing attack totaled 182 yards while the rushing game accounted for 56 yards. 
  • Vatter completed 18 of 39 passes with 182 yards, one touchdown and an pair of interceptions. 
  • Thomas Wilks totaled 72 yards rushing on 18 carries. 
  • Gresham had seven catches for 57 yards and a score. 
  • Sal Sidebotham led the Cavaliers with 13 tackles.
  • Amison and Shellenbarger ended the night with eight and seven tackles, respectively. Amison also had an interception and a sack.  

UP NEXT

  • Walsh will continue G-MAC play with a road game at Hillsdale on Saturday (October 9). The game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM kickoff.
