ASHLAND, OH: The Walsh University baseball team dropped all four games in a tough series against Ashland University this weekend at Archer Ballpark. The Cavaliers fell 11-4 in the opener on Thursday, followed by 9-4 and 8-2 losses in Friday's doubleheader, and an 8-5 defeat in the series finale on Saturday.
In the first game, Walsh kept it close early, with Cam Hollobaugh's RBI double in the fifth tying the game at 1-1. However, Ashland broke it open with a four-run seventh inning and added four more in the eighth. Andrew Morse provided a two-run double for Walsh in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ashland's offensive onslaught. Eric Bennett took the loss for Walsh after allowing four runs in the seventh.
In Friday's first game, Walsh battled but couldn't keep up with Ashland's consistent offense. Brodey Acres and Brandon Hire each contributed RBI singles, while Cam Hollobaugh blasted a solo home run in the seventh. Despite their efforts, starting pitcher Martin Polonkay struggled, allowing five runs over three innings.
The second game of Friday's doubleheader saw Ashland capitalize on timely hitting and defensive miscues by Walsh. The Cavaliers scored both their runs in the sixth inning on a groundout and an RBI single by Chad Harper. Alex Beyerle took the loss for Walsh, surrendering five runs over 4.2 innings.
In Saturday's finale, Walsh jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single by Andrew Morse in the first inning. Brodey Acres added an RBI double and later scored in a three-run ninth inning rally, but Ashland's five-run second inning proved too much to overcome. Chad Harper took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) in just one inning of work.
With the sweep, Walsh falls to 2-12 on the season while Ashland improves to 11-6. The Cavaliers will look to regroup as they return home to face Slippery Rock University on Tuesday.
