MASON, OH: This week, the Walsh University Baseball team competed in the Great Midwest Baseball Championship Tournament, held at Prasco Park. The double elimination tournament included the top 8 teams in the conference with the Cavs earning the 2nd seed, as they clinched the South Division title. The other teams were Northwood, Ashland, Hillsdale, Findlay, Ohio Dominican, Tiffin and Kentucky Wesleyan.
The first match up was against the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Panthers struck first scoring runs in each of the first two innings until a
Chris Kramer 2 run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Knotted up at 2, in the 3rd,
Cam Hollobaugh lined out to score
Josh Algarin, taking the Cavs only lead of the tournament. KWC scored in the bottom of the 4th and the Maroon and Gold had to play catch up the rest of the game. Tying it up at both 5 and 6 runs kept Walsh in the game until Kentucky Wesleyan scored in the 7th and 9th innings. With a runner on in the 9th, the Cavs couldn't get anything else going, falling to play a win or go home game the next day.Â
The game 2 match up was between the Cavs and the #3 team in the region and also #3 seeded Ashland Eagles. In once again another back and fourth battle, the game was knotted up at 3 runs until a single to centerfield and a Cav error allowed the Eagles to score 2 in the top of the 9th. The bottom of the 9th put Ashland on their heels as the Maroon and Gold saw the bases loaded with no outs. Unfortunately, 3 fly balls eliminated Walsh from the tournament with the final game of the season ending 5-3 in favor Ashland.Â
After a 3-17 start, Walsh ended their season as South Division Champions with an overall record of 20-26. 2 Cavs earned a spot on the All-Conference team with
Cam Hollobaugh, First Team, and
Brandon Cahill, Second Team.Â
