NORTH CANTON, OH: Great Midwest Conference play opened up this week for Men's Soccer and the Cavs first two tests were in hosting the Ohio Dominican Panthers and the Northwood Timberwolves. Against the Panthers, on Thursday, the Cavs fell, 3-1. Saturday's match up would result in a draw, 2-2.
In the G-MAC opener, the Panthers started the scoring early with a goal in the 5th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. That score held for the next 40 minutes as teh halftime score was 1-0. Senior,
Gabe Anderson, scored the equalizer for the Cavs shortly after the break, just one minute into the second half. The Cavs kept attacking the Panther net, out shooting them 15-8 with 10 shots on goal. However, the Panthers goalkeeper was a tough force to get past, making nine saves on the night. ODU scored twice more in the 67th and 84th minutes of play to snatch all three points from the Cavaliers on the opening night of conference play.
The match vs Northwood was a battle that went down to the very last whistle. The Cavs opened up scoring early, in the 14th minute of the game, through a
Gabe Anderson goal. They retained their lead for the majority of the first half until Northwood equalized in the 41st minute, making it 1-1 going into the break. In the second half, it was Northwood who struck first just 29 seconds after play resumed. Freshman,
Saul Tanhai, scored his first goal of the season on an assist from
Alvaro Gidron to level the score at 2-2 where it would stand for the remainder of the match. The Cavs kept Northwood's goalkeeper busy, firing 17 shots with 11 of them on frame. Walsh Goalkeeper,
Nick Bertolini, made 4 saves in between the sticks for the Cavs.
The Maroon and Gold are back in action Tuesday, September 23rd, at 7 P.M. when they travel to Cedarville University for their first away match in G-MAC play.
