NORTH CANTON, OH: Walsh Men's Basketball captured the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday afternoon. Seeded first, the Cavaliers took on the second seed, Lake Erie College. In the regular season, the teams split, beating each other on the road.
Coming in, the Cavaliers were riding a nine game win streak, not being in the losing column since suffering the loss to the Storm back in February. That streak continued this afternoon in the Championship victory.
With all the theatrics of the conference tournament over, the contest began with Lake Erie starting hot. The Storm hit two 3's gaining a 6-0 advantage. Walsh battled back tieing the game up after settling in to the high stakes game.
The Walsh Men did not take their first lead until the 10:56 mark of the first half, but from there, it was Maroon and Gold all the way to the final buzzer. A quick 8-0 run gave
Jeff Young and team a small cushion, allowing them to set the pace. Lake Erie responded late in the first half with their own 8-0 run, getting within 3 points but that was as close as the Storm got to the G-MAC Championship.
With a ten deep rotation, Walsh kept their pedal on the gas, like they have done many times this season, wearing down their opponents. The Men had a consistent 8-13 point lead for the duration with the final touches being added towards the end, earning as large as a 15 point lead.
The Cavs 13 point win earned them their second conference title in three years and 5th overall as a member of the Great Midwest. They previously won in 2024, 2022, 2020, and 2019.
With the win, Walsh gets the automatic bid to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. The teams seeding and match up will be revealed on Sunday night at 11pm. In the last regional rankings, the Cavs were 5th out of 8 teams.
Congratulations to the Walsh Men's Basketball team on their tournament championship!
