WHEELING, WV: The Walsh University Men's Soccer team took on the the Wheeling University Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1. The Cavaliers played to a scoreless draw through the first half. Wheeling responded with three goals to Walsh's one to secure the victory.
The Cardinals held a 15-4 advantage in shots despite the 0-0 score at the end of the first 45 minutes. Nick Bertolini kept the Cavs in the match with five saves in the opening half.
The second half opened with Wheeling finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. The Cavs responded just under 10 minutes later when Aleksandar Miketic scored his first goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1.
Walsh continued to battle as the match remained tied into the final 15 minutes. Wheeling eventually regained the lead in the 78th minute when KJ Viglundsson scored off an assist from Enzo Boulaoued. Just over a minute later, the Cardinals found the back of the net again as Jon-Michael Gordan scored his second goal of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Down the stretch, the Wheeling defense held off the Walsh attack to secure the 3-1 victory. Walsh finished the afternoon with 13 shots, including eight on goal, while Bertolini recorded eight saves in goal.
The Maroon and Gold will take Larry Staudt Field on Wednesday, at 6pm, vs Slippery Rock.
