Cavs Rally to Win Season Opener

(ELKINS, W.Va.) - Walsh (1-0) rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to defeat Davis & Elkins College (0-1) 81-77 in the first game of the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge. The Cavs will meet Alderson-Broaddus University at 5:30 pm on Saturday.

After scoring the first two points of the game, Walsh trailed the entire first half. They fell behind 38-24 with 3:43 to play in the half, before staging a furious rally to trail by only four points at 40-36 at intermission.

The second half was back and forth, with Walsh finally regaining the lead at 45-43 on a Sarah Stephenson (6-0, So., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) jumper with 14:59 to play.

The Cavs would fall behind by five points, twice, before tying the game at 57 on a Whitney Dabbelt (6-0, Jr., West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) layup with 9:10 to play.

Walsh would expand the lead to seven points at 75-68 with 2:24 to play, and looked to be in command. But this time the Senators would stage a rally of their own and tie the game at 75 with 1:11 to play on a Stephanie Wooten three.

Walsh would answer with a Kelsey Funderburgh (5-7, So., North Lewisburg, OH/Triad/Morehead State) three to regain the lead for good at 78-75 with 56 seconds to play. The Cavs would then hit 3-4 free throws to settle the issue.

Audrey Badovick (5-5, Jr., Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) led Walsh with a career-high 20 points. She connected on 6-10 from the floor and 8-8 from the stripe.  She also dished out five assists and had two steals. Funderburgh added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Dabbeltt also had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Funderburgh also handed out six assists and had four steals.

The Cavs received fine bench play from Rachael Trujillo (5-8, So., Cleveland, OH/Westlake) with nine points and Sarah Stephenson with seven points and four rebounds.
