(CLARION, Pa.) - Walsh fell to hosting Clarion by a score of 73-70 in a hard-fought non-conference, out-of-region contest in a make-up game Monday evening. The Cavaliers (5-9) and Golden Eagles (7-7) of the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference were originally scheduled to play back on November 30, but inclement weather forced the game to be postponed.

The Cavs made a strong comeback attempt after being down by as many as 16 and had a a few opportunities to tie the game, but a turnover with a second remaining sealed the deal for Walsh.

Kelsey Funderburgh (So., 5-7, North Lewisburg, OH/Triad/Morehead State) brought Walsh within a single possession of tying the game after a 3-pointer made the score 73-70 with 61 seconds left in the game. Funderburgh stole the ball on Clarion's next two possessions, but 3-point attempts by her and Tara Gallupe (Sr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) were no good.

Despite the close score, Walsh never never lead and was only tied once with Clarion when the score was 2-2. The hosts led 42-36 at halftime.

Second chances kept the Cavaliers in the game as 18 offensive rebounds led to 20 points. Overall, Walsh out-rebounded Clarion 44-42. 

Both teams had trouble defensively as the Golden Eagles made 26 turnovers while the Cavaliers were counted for 22. 

Alyssa Jones (Jr., 5-9, Louisville, OH/HS) came on strong late in the game to lead the Walsh offense with 12 points. Defensively she added four steals. Rachael Trujillo (So., 5-8, Cleveland, OH/Westlake) and Gallupe also scored in double figures for the Cavs with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Clarion's Kelly Johnson proved difficult to stop as she scored 21 points on 9-of-15 from the field.

The Cavaliers return to conference play when they travel to Ashland this Thursday. It's the first game of the GLIAC South portion of the schedule. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
