Cavs Come From Behind To Bite Bulldogs

Box Score

(BIG RAPIDS, Mich.) - A strong second-half surge propelled Walsh to a come-from-behind win against Ferris State by a score of 82-79 in GLIAC action Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (10-4, 4-4) were down 55-45 halfway through the second half before they scored 37 points in the last 10:22 to stun the Bulldogs (7-4, 5-3).

With a Whitney Dabbelt (6-0, Sr., West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) layup at the 10:09 mark, the Cavs started a 21-2 run to take control of the game. Ferris State answered with a pair of free throws before Kelsey Funderburgh (5-7, Jr., North Lewisburg, OH/Triad) responded with one of her five 3-pointers in the game to start a string of 19 consecutive points for Walsh. The run was capped on a 3-pointer by Audrey Badovick (5-5, Sr., Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) that put the score at 66-57 with 4:53 to go in the game.

Ferris State didn't give up, however, and cut Walsh's lead from 78-71 to 78-77 in just 18 seconds during the last minute of the game. The Bulldogs were forced to foul during those last 21 seconds and sent Funderburgh to the line where she made both free throws to make the score 80-77. A quick layup by the Bulldogs put the hosts within one point once again, but Funderburgh sank her final two free throws. A game-tying effort was fended off by Brittni Clopton (5-11, Fr., Ft. Wayne, IN/South Side) who stole the ball with two seconds left.

Funderburgh had a monster game with a game-high 26 points. All of her field goals came from behind the 3-point line and she was also clutch from the charity stripe as she was 11-of-12 on her free throws. She also did a decent job of spreading the ball around with six assist.

Brooklyn Wooten (5-8, So., Grove City, OH/Central Crossing) had a strong game as well with 21 points. She was 7-of-12 from the field with three 3-pointers and seven rebounds. Walsh took a short lead at 42-41 after one of her 3's and a layup early in the second half before Ferris State went on a run to make the score 55-45. Clopton finished with 11 points and seven rebounds as the third Cavalier in double-figures.

With competition against the North Division now complete, the Cavs set their sights on the South Division. First up on the slate is a home game with Ashland this Thursday. Tip-off against the Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m.
