Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – A late goal by Jessie Gearhart made sure Walsh avoided an upset-minded Findlay as the Cavaliers took home a 3-2 victory on a chilly Friday night at MIlazzo Field. The Cavs (5-3-2, 3-2) remained unbeaten at home and have won three-straight, while the Oilers (1-6-2, 0-3-1) remain in search of their first GLIAC win.
Kristen Conti put Walsh out to a 2-0 lead on very similar goals in the first and second halves. The first came on a one-on-one opportunity as Corynne Swift passed the ball up on a breakaway. Conti easily put the ball past the Oiler keeper for a quick lead just 6:52 into the game.
Her second goal also came early in the second half on another chance between her and the goalie. Conti's first shot was on target and saved, but it was hit so hard it bounced right back out to Conti who made sure she didn't miss the second time.
Findlay didn't give up as the offense heated up and started to pepper Michaella Stucky with shots. Overall the Oilers out-shot the Cavs 18-13, and it seemed that the majority of those came in the final 30. Megan Kupetz put the visitors on the board with a header just inside the near post after a corner kick from Carly Morris in the 70th minute.
Just a few minutes later, Katelyn Anderson tied the game up on a centered pass from the right side of the box by Marissa Swindell at 75:07.
Just as it appeared the two teams would head to overtime, Emily Durina found and open Gearhart down the middle of the field. Gearhart drew out the goalie and rolled the ball by her for the game-winner at 84:50.
Despite giving up two goals, Stucky had an otherwise solid game with eight saves on 18 shots faced.
The Cavaliers are off on Sunday and travel for a pair of games next weekend. First up is Saginaw Valley on Friday, Oct. 9, with a scheduled start of 1 p.m.
