Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - It's been a strong start to the season for the Walsh women's basketball team as it defeated a second team from Indianapolis this week. However this was the first regular season game for the Cavaliers who defeated the University of Indianapolis (0-1) 60-44 in a GLVC/GLIAC Crossover regional game Friday evening.
Walsh also defeated Big East member Butler in an exhibition in Indianapolis on Sunday night by a score of 70-68 in overtime.
A 13-0 run to close the first quarter gave Walsh the lift it needed to break open a close game. It was sparked on a jumper by Kelsey Funderburgh that put the Cavs up for good at 10-9 with 4:13 to play in the opening frame.
UIndy didn't go away and threatened late in the first half and at the beginning of the second half. The Greyhounds cut the deficit to two at 31-29 after a Princess German layup, but the Cavs answered with layups by Alex Hochstedler and Funderburgh sandwiched around a trey by Funderburgh.
The lead hovered around double digits for the rest of the game as Walsh kept UIndy from threatening again with a stout defense that forced the Greyhounds into 23 turnovers.
Funderburgh led with a game-high 16 points as she was 6-of-15 from the field. She added three steals and two assists on the night. Hochstedler added 12 points as she was 5-of-9 from the field. Brittni Clopton was a force on the post as she came through with 10 points and a game-high seven boards.
The Cavaliers now hit the road for their next four games. The first one will be in the Mountain State as Walsh travels to Wheeling Jesuit for a Wednesday date. Tip-off with the Cardinals is set for 7 p.m.
