Cinderella Run Ends For Walsh In GLIAC Championship

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Ohio) – The clock struck midnight on Walsh's Cinderella run as it fell 76-59 to Ferris State in the GLIAC Tournament Championship at Kates Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers (16-13) were just the third No. 8 seed to upset the No. 1 seed and second to reach the championship game in tournament history.

The No. 6 Bulldogs (22-9) have now won back-to-back tournament championships and will move on to the NCAA National Tournament.

Jesse Hardin Jr. (Sr., Warren, Ohio/Harding) scored 23 points in the loss to cap his incredible career. He scored the first points of the game with a 3-pointer to set the record for most triples in a GLIAC tournament. He finished with five to put the record at 20.

He also helped the Cavaliers smash the GLIAC team record for 3-pointers in a tournament. The previous record was 30 set by Hillsdale in 1995 and 1997. With 12 today, Walsh set the new mark with 40.

As a result for his efforts, Hardin Jr. was named to the GLIAC All-Tournament team. He averaged 27.0 points per game. He was joined by Zac Carter (Jr., Ironton, Ohio/Ironton) who averaged 16.0 points and six assists per game.

Steven Carpenter (So., Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Christian) had a breakout career-game as he finished with 21 points and was 8-of-11 from the field. He was spectacular from behind the arc as he was 5-of-6 on 3-point attempts.

Walsh started the game fast much like it did in the semifinal against Hillsdale. Triples by Hardin Jr. and Carpenter sandwiched around a Carter jumper gave the Cavaliers an 8-0 lead to open up the game.

The Bulldogs slowly crawled back over the course of the first half. Ferris State took its first lead on a layup by Drew Cushingberry with 4:58 to go in the opening frame and held it the rest of the way. It featured a balanced offense with four double-figure scorers and shot 53.3 percent from the field.
