Box Score (WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) – Down by four late in the game, Walsh rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning to come from behind and eventually defeat Wayne State (Neb.) 8-4 on Wednesday. The Cavaliers (6-6) are now 4-1 in their spring break games in Florida.
The Wildcats (3-9) initially took the lead with a run in the third inning. Wayne State then followed with two more in the fourth and its final run in the sixth.
The Cavs' big inning started when Eric Conner scored after Jason McPeek doubled deep to center field. An error on the next play allowed McPeek to score and bring Walsh within two runs. Luke Caple and Andrew Stalnaker followed with back-to-back singles before Austin Szink drew a bases-loaded walk to score James Thomas.
Walsh then implemented the long ball as Johnny Knight IV took the second pitch deep to left field for a grand slam to give the Cavaliers a 7-4 lead. McPeek homered in the bottom of the eighth for an insurance run.
Logan Bowles picked up the win after he came on in relief in the sixth inning. He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up one run on three hits with a strikeout and a walk. Tyson Lautanen took to the hill in the ninth to close the game.
The Cavaliers return to the Lake Myrtle Park fields tomorrow as they play Minnesota Duluth with a start time of 12:45 p.m.
