Walsh Wins G-MAC Debut vs. Davis & Elkins

Box Score

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – It was a successful debut for Walsh as it defeated Davis & Elkins 67-57 in its first G-MAC game in program history. The Cavaliers improved to 4-1 overall on the season while the Senators, who were also playing in their G-MAC opener, dropped to 1-4.

Walsh started to take charge of the game with just under seven minutes left in the first half when Reece Bogan nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 21-21. The basket sparked an impressive 32-7 run over the next 13:04 of game time stretching into the second half to take a 50-28 lead.

The offense was well-balanced throughout the night as nobody on the team reached double figures by that point despite reaching the half-century mark and the Cavs' largest lead of the game. That moment didn't come until Branden Wilkins gave the Cavs a 53-31 lead just a little bit later on a layup. Darryl Straughter joined him less than a minute later on a layup of his own and converted the and-one opportunity with a Senators foul.

Straugther finished with a team-high 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Wilkins finished with 10 also on 4-of-6 from the field with one triple.

Sterling Christy and Chandler Vaudrin reached double-figures in the rebound department with 11 each to help the Cavs control the boards by a 49-41 margin.

Walsh's defense was exceptional on the evening as it limited the fourth-best scoring offense in the conference to 25 points under its season average to this point. The Cavs also held Davis & Elkins' Edmund Parker, the reigning G-MAC Player of the Week and the team's leading scorer to just a single point. He was averaging 17.3 coming into the game.

The Cavaliers will close out their six-game home stand against another Mountain State team in Alderson Broaddus on Saturday. Tip-off with the Battlers is set for 1 p.m.
