First Half Run Lifts Cavaliers in Cleveland, 96-74

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Playing on the floor of the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team defeated the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Wednesday (Dec. 18). 

Walsh won their fifth straight game and third in the last five days as they improved to 10-2 on the season. 

Mayci Sales and Megan Ball combined for the first seven points of the game as the Cavaliers led 7-2 in the first two minutes. Tyler Newkirk and Quionche Carter added layups as Walsh's lead grew to 11-4. West Liberty battled back with a 7-0 run, tying the game at 11 with 5:35 left in the first quarter. Walsh closed the first quarter on a 14-4 run as they led 25-15 after one quarter. 

The Cavaliers opened the second quarter on a 13-0 run, and outscored the Hilltoppers 18-2 over the first seven minutes of the second quarter. Walsh led by 21, 46-25 at the halftime intermission.

West Liberty hit two three pointers in the early moments of the third quarter, closing the lead to 48-31. Walsh took off on a 13-3 run as the lead grew to 27 at the media timeout behind seven points from Sales and four from Carter. Walsh's lead remained above 20 throughout the rest of the third quarter as they led 75-50 after three periods. 

The teams exchanged baskets throughout the first half of the fourth quarter. After Sales put Walsh up 89-63 after the media timeout, West Liberty went on a 9-0 run to close the gap to 17 with 3:12 to go. The sister duo of Mayci and Majestic Sales ended the game with a 7-2 run for Walsh. The Cavaliers were victorious 96-74. 

Two players finished with double-doubles for the Cavaliers. Mayci Sales scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds along with five blocks. She made seven field goals and went eight-of-ten from the free throw line. Carter scored 27 points with ten rebounds for her first double-double of the year. 

Ball scored 15 points and Alyssa Dean added 13 points off the bench. 

Walsh shot 50.7% from the floor, all while scoring 70 points in the paint. 

The Cavaliers will be off for the rest of 2019 while they will prepare for Kentucky Wesleyan on January 2nd, 2020. Tipoff with the Panthers is set for 5:30 PM.
