Box Score CANTON, Ohio - For the amount of passion that comes with the Walsh-Malone series, every bit of it showed on Monday at Osborne Hall as the #19 Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team made the crosstown trip to face the Malone Pioneers.
The battle between the two schools that are separated by 4.4 miles ended up being decided by one second. Malone's Sehill Mouliom made a pair of free throws with one second left on the clock in a 77-76 win for the Pioneers.
The ballgame featured eight total lead changes and seven ties as the outcome came down to the final seconds. Most of those lead changes and ties came in the second half, all in the final five minutes of game action.
All five starters ended in double-figures for the second straight game and third time this season. Darryl Straughter ended the contest with 21 points with four three pointers and a perfect seven-of-seven from the free throw line. Straughter gave the Cavaliers a 76-75 lead with nine seconds left as he converted a pair of free throws. Mark Mokros added 15 points with four field goals (two threes) and five-of-six on free throws. Christian Montague put 14 points on the board with eight rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes. JT Shumate and Caleb Canter each had 12 points and cleaned up on the glass as Shumate had nine rebounds to Canter's seven.
Walsh finished with a 44% shooting percentage as they dropped to 20-5 overall and 11-4 in the G-MAC.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Cedarville with a 6:00 PM tipoff.
