Box Score 4 NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team hosted the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots in a four-game Great Midwest series on Saturday (April 10) and Sunday (April 11) at Biery Stadium. On the help of tons of offense and key pitching, Walsh improved to 18-7 overall and 15-5 in the G-MAC with a sweep.
On Saturday, Walsh took the doubleheader with a 10-1 win in game one and a 4-1 win in game two. The Cavaliers won the Sunday matchups 7-2 and 17-2 to end the series.
Saturday 4/10
Game 1 (W, 10-1 in 9 innings)
- Cam Kaiser opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field in the second inning as Walsh led 1-0. A six-run third inning blew the game open on the help of five hits and two walks. After two singles and a walk, Brenden Spaulding drilled a grand slam to left field. Ben Lefebvre added a two-run double later in the frame as Walsh led 7-0 after three innings. Spaulding plated a run in the sixth with a RBI single while Lefebvre had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for an 9-0 lead. Ohio Valley got on the board in the top of the eighth inning but Walsh answered in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Alec Debruler. Walsh took the opening game of the series 10-1.
- Jacob Beachy tallied four hits, including two doubles for the Cavaliers. Spaulding was three-of-four with five RBI. Lefebvre plated three runs on two hits while Andrew Czech was the other player with a multi-hit game.
- Drew Saunier allowed one run in eight innings, while scattering seven hits while walking one and striking out ten. Tyler Giesige pitched a scoreless ninth in relief with one hit and a strikeout.
Game 2 (W, 4-1 in 7 innings)
- Ohio Valley struck first in the top of the second inning on a RBI groundout. Lefebvre blasted a two-run double to center field as Walsh took a 2-1 lead. Cobe Hutchison added a RBI single later in the frame for a 3-1 lead. Hutchison came through again with a RBI single in the fourth inning as the scoring closed to 4-1.
- Cobe Hutchison accounted for three of Walsh's nine hits with two RBI as well. Debruler and Kaiser each had two hits with one run scored.
- Hyatt Shenefield went five innings of one-run ball with five hits allowed and three strikeouts. Cole Brogan and Dylan Corsi each pitched a scoreless inning of relief work behind Shenefield.
Sunday 4/11
Game 1 (W, 7-2 in 7 innings)
- The Cavaliers wasted little time as Walsh scored three runs out of the gate in the first inning. Spaulding broke the scoreless tie with a RBI double and Alec Debruler followed with a two-run blast to left. A run scored in the fourth inning on a throwing error during a stolen base attempt. Joey Holiga made it 5-0 with a RBI single. Kaiser singled home a run in the sixth inning and Czech blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning. Ohio Valley scored their two runs on a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
- Spaulding, Holiga and Debruler all had two hits for Walsh as Spaulding doubled twice and Holiga doubled once.
- Brant Alazaus tossed seven innings of two-run ball on five hits and he struck out eight batters for a complete-game.
Game 2 (W, 17-2 in 9 innings)
- Walsh scored in all but one inning, including four multi-run innings. In a three-run first inning, Holiga had a two-run homer and Spaulding doubled home a run. Hutchison made it 5-0 with a two-run single in the second inning and Davis Burick singled in the sixth run of the day in the third inning. In the fourth and fifth inning respectively, Walsh plated runs on a a Spaulding sacrifice fly and a Hutchison fielder's choice as Walsh led 8-0 after five innings. The Fighting Scots scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Beachy doubled in a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Lefebvre followed with a RBI single. Walsh's lead grew to 11-2 through six innings. A six-run eighth inning made it 17-2 for the Cavaliers. Austin Marko walked with the bases loaded and Lefebvre and Burick were hit by pitches, bringing in runs. Jared Lieberman, Holiga, and Matt McGrath all had RBI singles in the frame, closing the scoring at 17-2.
- Walsh totaled 19 hits and five walks between the team. Hutchison and Lefebvre both had three hits. Holiga, Czech, Lieberman, Beachy and Burick all made two hits in the game. Nine different players drove in runs throughout the game.
- Nick Lallathin allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings with six strikeouts. Alex Firsdon, Caleb Canter and MJ Nara each pitched a scoreless inning.
Walsh will travel to Lake Erie this weekend for a four-game series. The series will begin Friday (April 16) and will conclude Saturday (April 17) at Classic Park.
