Walsh defeats University of Akron

AKRON, OH- The Walsh University Cavaliers took on the Zips from the University of Akron Wednesday (April 7th) evening. The Cavs prevailed against the Zips by a score of 9-3, improving to 14-7 on the season.

Records: Walsh 14-7 (11-5), Akron 9-12 (3-9)

After four soreless innings, the Cavaliers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With runner on second and third, Cameron Kaiser hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Andrew Czech to score the first run of the game. Brendan Spaulding scored the second run of the inning as he advanced to homeplate on a wild pitch. Walsh led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. 

The Cavaliers remained hot at the plate as Spaulding recorded his 28th RBI of the season, extending the Walsh lead 3-0 in the top of the 5th.

Akron answered with a Will Cheatam RBI to right field that sent Tate Wargo home. 

In the top of the seventh, first baseman Andrew Czech hit a double down the left field line to extend Walsh's lead 4-1. The Zips cut the lead to two as Sean Swenson scored the second run for Akron at the bottom of the seventh. 

Akron struck back again in the bottom of the eight to put themselves within one run of the Cavs. 

Walsh went on to score five runs in the ninth inning of the matchup to make the final score 9-3. Ben Lefebvre led the charge with a double to right field and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. With a runner in scoring position, Cobe Hutchinson singled to the right side, allowing Lefebvre to score. Joey Holiga followed with a single to left field that advanced Hutchinson to second. Both Holiga and Hutchinson advanced a base on a wild pitch. #33 Andrew Czech walked to load the bases for Brendan Spaulding. Spaulding hit another RBI to extend the Cavalier lead 6-3. Bases remained loaded as Alec DeBruler reached first base on a fielder's choice that allowed Joey Holiga to score Walsh's seventh run. Third basemen Cam Kaiser tabbed his 12th RBI of the year as he singled to the left side. The Cavaliers finished the inning on a 5-0 run. 

FOR THE CAVALIERS

  • Brendan Spaulding and Joey Holiga recorded a pair of hits each
  • Cobe Hutchinson, Andrew Czech, Cam Kaiser, Jarett Lyon, Ben Lefebrve, and Davis Burick each had one hit on the day
  • Brendan Spaulding led all RBIs at three
  • Cole Brogan earned his first win of the season and threw for a game-high four strikeouts

  • Will Cheatham led Akron in RBIs at two
  • Tate Wargo, Sean Swenson, and Breydan Cavey totaled three hits a piece

The Cavaliers will host the Fighting Scots from Ohio Valley this weekend (April 10th and 11th) as they continue conference play.
