ALLENDALE, MI - The Walsh University Cavaliers opened their 2024-25 men's basketball season with a challenging matchup against the Grand Valley State Lakers, falling 105-68 at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on November 8th. As the defending G-MAC champions, the Cavaliers faced a tough test against a powerful Lakers team that showcased their offensive prowess.
The game started with Grand Valley State establishing control, quickly building a significant lead. Walsh struggled to keep pace, trailing 50-27 at halftime. Despite a stronger second half where they scored 41 points, the Cavaliers could not overcome the Lakers' relentless offense.
Ayden Carter led Walsh with an impressive performance, scoring 20 points on efficient 6-of-9 shooting from the field and going 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Kobe Mitchell also contributed with 14 points, while
Zack Oddo added 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the losing effort.
For Grand Valley State, Kaden Brown paced a balanced attack with 18 points, while William Dunn added 13 points and Jalen Charity chipped in with 9 points, showcasing a balanced scoring attack. The Lakers showcased their depth, with their bench outscoring Walsh's reserves 55-5.
While it wasn't the start to the season the defending G-MAC champs were hoping for, Walsh will look to bounce back in their next game against Nova Southeastern University on Friday, November 15th, in Fort Lauderdale, FL.Â
