NORTH CANTON, OH: The home opener for Walsh Softball may have been delayed a few times over the past few weeks but the team was sure to make it an exciting home series as they split with conference opponent, Northwood. Winning 8-7 in extra innings and then falling 5-1 in game two, the Maroon and Gold head into rival, Malone with a 1-1 record in G-MAC play.
In game 1, Walsh hopped out to a 2-0 lead that was then followed up by strong 2nd and 4th innings by the Timberwolves. Down 7-4 after five innings, the Cavs came to life in the bottom of the 7th, rallying back to knot it up at 7 runs apiece.
Laney Ferrance got the rally started, followed by timely hits from
Sydney McKeever,
Sarah Moats, and
Sarah Cantley. Both teams escaped the 8th inning as strong defense kept both offenses at bay. The winning run for the Cavs got on base on the first pitch in the bottom of the 9th as
Sarah Moats tripled to left field. Northwood then intentionally walked the next two Walsh batters.
Riley Grimm walked it off for the Maroon and Gold with her RBI single to center field. The thrilling victory was the Cavaliers first win over Northwood since 2015.
In game 2, the Cavs struck first once again but the rest of the game was all Northwood as they connected on 10 hits and held Walsh to only 3. The Timberwolves took the contest, 5-1.
The next game for the Maroon and Gold will be at Malone on Wednesday. The G-MAC doubleheader is set to start at 3pm.
