NORTH CANTON, OH: The Walsh Cavaliers football team fought a hard battle but fell just short, losing 23-20 to Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon. Walsh (6-4, 4-4) grabbed an early lead when Trey Martin connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Van Horn. From there, it was all Hillsdale until the middle of the 3rd when the Cavs faced an uphill battle down, 23-10. A 20 yard field goal from Jarrad Kerekes got Walsh within 10 heading in to the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was filled with excitement and drama as the Cavs clawed back in to the game. A defensive stop on 4th and short, and a muffed punt by Hillsdale gave the home team the opportunities they needed. Dante Walker found the end zone with 8:05 to cut the deficit to three. Another stop by the Walsh defense gave the ball back to the Walsh offense but the tieing 42 yard field goal was just left, resulting in the tough loss.
Walsh's offense, struggling with key injuries, moved the ball effectively, accumulating 327 total yards with Van Horn throwing for 223 yards and completing 20 of 34 passes. Jake Gill led the ground game with 52 yards rushing, while Walker added 42 yards and the crucial touchdown run.
Defensively, Marvin Conkle and Ryan Page led the charge with 8 tackles each.
Next up for Walsh is a home game on November 15th vs the Northwood Timberwolves. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
