CANTON, OH - The Walsh University Cavaliers suffered a disappointing 69-55 loss to their crosstown rivals, the Malone University Pioneers, in the annual Mayor's Cup game at Osborne Hall on February 11th, 2025. This defeat dropped Walsh's record to 7-14 overall and 3-12 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, while Malone improved to 10-13 overall and 6-9 in the G-MAC.
The Cavaliers started strong, taking a 39-30 lead into halftime. However, Malone dominated the second half, outscoring Walsh 39-16 to secure the victory and retain the Mayor's Cup.
Zack Oddo led the charge for Walsh with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting in 39 minutes of play.
Kobe Mitchell struggled from the field, scoring 9 points on 2-of-12 shooting, but contributed 7 rebounds.
Ayden Carter and
Kaleb Schaffer each added 8 points to the Cavaliers' effort.
The Cavaliers' shooting woes in the second half proved to be their undoing, as they shot a dismal 16.67% from the field and went 0-for-9 from three-point range after the break. In contrast, Malone's efficient shooting in the second half, particularly from beyond the arc, proved to be the difference-maker.
For Malone, Tre Baumgardner III had an outstanding game, leading all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. Caleb Conard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Despite Walsh's efforts, they couldn't overcome Malone's hot shooting and rebounding advantage. The Pioneers outrebounded the Cavaliers 38-28, which proved crucial in securing the win and the Mayor's Cup.
